Technical Societies 

The Information Technology Society (ITG) 

Frankfurt 

The Information Technology Society deals with all aspects of information technology in industry, administration, teaching, research and science. Its primary aim is to promote the scientific and technical development of information technology and its practical application.

 

The ITG was founded in 1954, making it the oldest of the VDE societies. Today it has around 11,000 members, with 1,400 volunteer experts working in various bodies. The ITG has nine specialist divisions.

 

 

ITG aims:

  • Promote information and communications technology research
  • Foster and support upcoming generations of ICT specialists
  • Generate new ideas for the information society
  • Coordinate ICT developments on an international level
  • Serve as an interface between ITG members and society, industry, politics, the media and other groups. 

ITG activities:

  • Exchange and evaluation scientific findings, information, etc.
  • Organizing discussions, workshops, seminars and conventions to debate the latest developments in ICT
  • Publication of position papers, technical journals, conference reports, brochures, periodicals, etc.
  • Collaboration with national and international associations
  • Participation in research projects
  • Providing terminology for IT standardization
  • Influencing and advising on education and training issues
  • Prizes and awards to honor outstanding academic achievements of upcoming ICT engineers and scientists

ITG organization:

 

The ITG, based in Frankfurt am Main, is divided into nine specialist divisions containing over 100 bodies covering the entire spectrum of information and communication technology. The ITG has a nine-member Board which supervises and controls the work of the ITG executive. The Board is also assisted by a scientific advisory council. The ITG is organized into the following specialist divisions:

  • Information Society and Focus Projects
  • Services and Applications
  • Broadcasting, Film and Electronic Media
  • Audio Communication Technology and Systems
  • Technical Informatics and Computer Science
  • Microelectronics
  • Shared Concepts and Components 

International collaboration

 

The ITG works closely with a wide range of organizations concerned with ICT. Delegates and advisors representing the specialist committees serve as ambassadors to the appropriate organs. The ITG maintains close contacts with:

  • The Federation of National Electrical Engineering Organizations in Europe (EUREL)
  • The Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS)
  • The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
  • The International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
