The challenge of the
Engineering Competition 2019
Did you ever face the situation that you are streaming a football game, and at the most critical moment, like a penalty shoot-out, your stream needs to buffer? Or have you experienced that annoying short message your network provider sends to you, a week before the end of the month, saying you have used 80% of your data cap? At least, if you are living in Germany you know it.
5G Broadcast is a revolutionary technology. The potential to broadcast content to a mobile device would render data plans obsolete, as consumers would no longer need them to be able to stream content on their mobile devices. Instead, the newly designed 5G chips in your smartphones are recognizing that the content is made available for mass consumption, and switches the reception channel. Hence, you get an improved Quality of Experience (QoE) while having no costs of using your own data plans.
The challenge however, is to efficiently use the 5G Broadcast network for content that is in high demand and optimize the consumers requests by minimizing the amount of unsatisfied consumer demands. In this year’s challenge, we provide you with a 5G Broadcast Network Dataset, and challenge you to use machine learning to minimize the unsatisfied user request and to improve the QoE for most of the users.

How it works
The Engineering Competition takes place since 2004.
More than 2,000 students from different countries have already taken part in the past years and demonstrated their expertise. There are three steps within the competition.
Step 1: Register
At the registration you will select the country you are from and which university you are attending. Then add the names of your team members and create a name for your team.
You will be able to register until May 19th, 2019.
Step 2: The online challenge
The team will have three weeks to work on the task and submit the results. Make things happen between April 26th and May 19th. You will receive the data set on April 26th and then be able to submit your solution on our platform. You will receive the necessary information for the challenge once you have registered.
Step 3: The finals
The best teams of the online challenge will be informed by email and will receive an invitation to the finals.
The finals will take place at Rohde & Schwarz in Munich, from June 5th to 7th, 2019.
All necessary travel information will be provided to you. The costs for travel and accommodation will be fully covered by Rohde & Schwarz. We have arranged for accommodation already. For participants with a greater travel distance, we would recommend to arrive by June 4th, 2019. Travelers from the USA and Asia, you will need passports prior to travel to Munich. The winners of the competition can win up to USD 3,000 per team.
