CyberSecurity: BlueID receives certification for secure mobile access control from the VDE Institute

BlueID is a product of baimos technologies which turns smartphones into keys and thus supports companies in secure access control for IoT (Internet of Things).  On 26th April 2017, it received the VDE certificate for information security at the Hannover Messe.

The VDE experts tested BlueID in the areas Trusted Cloud Service, Smartphone SDK (Software Development Kit) for iOS and Android as well as Secured Object SDK. "With BlueID, baimos technologies provides individual secure identities for various IoT devices and machines, which form the basis for secure, integrated communications and permits permissions, e.g. in the access control only permitted to individual specific devices and machines. This process can be used in all possible applications in the IoT, which requires strictly controlled authorization, whether Connected Car, Smart Home, Smart Building or Industry 4.0 "explains Florian Schiebl, Managing Director of baimos technologies. Thus, a central Trusted Cloud Service via certificates controls devices and machines that can communicate and interact with each other in a protected manner. Authentication and authorization is independently implemented purely by a secure bluetooth low-energy connection between smartphone and object completely.

BlueID is based on a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), a system for digital certificates that ensures trustworthy identities and enables secure encryption. "In order to test the BlueID technology and to check the security of the system, we installed a reference system in the VDE Smart Home Laboratory in Offenbach" explains Siegfried Pongratz, Head of Smart Technologies and Digital Systems at the VDE Institute. For this purpose, VDE engineers integrated reference applications on test devices on all supported operating systems and checked the security measures, secure data storage and communication with the secured object and the trust center in the backend. In addition, VDE experts tested and verified packet-based communications, including encryption. The Trust Center had to withstand the penetration tests of the VDE Institute against the infrastructure and the API (Application Programming Interface). In addition, the VDE experts examined the security procedure directly on site at baimos technologies in Munich.

"In the future, the company’s ability to prevent attacks on its DNS decides on its success. Customers want to have the certainty that their data is secure. Attacks like the DDoS attack on Internet services Twitter, Paypal, Netflix or Spotify show the importance of cybersecurity, especially in a smartphone-based access control. The VDE certificate for the proof of information security helps to build confidence in these IoT technologies ", summarizes Pongratz.

About the VDE Testing and Certification Institute

The registered Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE), with its 36,000 members (which includes 1,300 companies, 8,000 students and 6,000 young professionals), is one of Europe's largest technical-scientific associations that combines science, work on standards, testing, and certification under one roof.
The VDE Testing and Certification Institute supported by the VDE is a nationally- and internationally- accredited institution in the field of testing, inspection and certification of electrotechnical equipment, components and systems. These electrical products are tested for safety, usability, and further product features. Due to the global digitalization, the VDE Institute has developed test and assessment procedures for cyber security, interoperability and functional safety, offering comprehensive and high-quality testing services in this field.
Since 1920, the VDE mark represents safety and quality in the electrical and information technology. Cooperation agreements in more than 50 countries ensure that the inspections carried out by the VDE receive international recognition. Manufacturers and the trade regard the certificates and marks of the VDE as opening up access to world markets.
