Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the topics currently dominating technology and society. The term was coined more than 60 years ago. But it was only the breakthrough of deep neural networks as an AI method that has caused developments to literally explode since 2011.

In the meantime, scientific institutions as well as large and small companies are providing a wide variety of offerings that were unthinkable just a few years ago. At the same time, commercial and private users are overburdened with the task of assessing the benefits and security of AI systems. This is precisely where the VDE comes in: We stand for an approach to AI that promotes innovation and at the same time safeguards values. Together with partners, we thus set important impulses at the German, European and international level and help shape AI. Some examples:

  • What will the interface between man and machine on the digital factory floor look like in the future? VDE experts are working on answers to this question: They are compiling relevant design rules in an interdisciplinary manner and developing them further on the basis of concrete use cases.
  • VDE Digital Technologies Practice Network) and German Society for Biomedical Engineering in VDE are bringing together all the relevant stakeholders: Together, we have just developed an orientation picture for the physician-technology symbiosis 2035. In the field of Ambient Assisted Living, we are also developing concepts for a constructive approach to AI.
  • How can ethics in AI applications be defined and examined in concrete terms? How can this be done internationally without diluting our European values?
Together with other institutions, we have developed a labeling approach. In this way, we want to go beyond mere standardization or certification of processes - because this would only be effective to a limited extent.
  • How can the functional safety of AI systems be guaranteed that are self-learning and will therefore behave differently tomorrow than they do today?
Here, VDE is developing basic principles, for example in the area of image recognition, and testing approaches.
  • How can German industry, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, evaluate the potential of AI for themselves and introduce the right AI systems?
VDE is preparing matching mechanisms and curated information offerings to help with the first steps.

How will doctors and technology interact in the future? And what does that mean for healthcare?

In addition VDE is networked nationally and internationally: It provides the chairpersons in important European (CEN-CENELEC AI Focus Group) and international (IEC SEG 10) standardization bodies. It supports members of the Bundestag, federal ministries and the EU Commission with neutral expertise on AI. With concrete proposals, we bridge the gap between technical possibilities and societal needs. And last but not least, VDE is building consortia and tangible projects, for example to facilitate the pooling of training data for AI, especially for SMEs. To this end, we are cooperating with, among others, the German Federal Association for Artificial Intelligence, with our standardization colleagues at DIN, with numerous research institutions such as DFKI, and with thought leaders among AI providers and AI users.

Quality of Artificial Intelligence: VDE and State of Hesse intensify cooperation

2022-11-02 press release

How can the quality of artificial intelligence (AI) be verified and improved? This was the topic of today's first AI Quality Summit, hosted by the Hessian Minister for Digital Strategy and Development, Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, and the VDE. The state of Hesse and the technology organisation are currently in the process of setting up an AI Quality & Testing Hub – a unique nationwide project with European appeal. The hub is intended to help manufacturers not only to increase the quality and performance of their AI products, but also to prove it in the market.

In the fall of 2019, VDE and the Bertelsmann Stiftung launched the interdisciplinary AI Ethics Impact Group and jointly developed the study "AI Ethics: From Principles to Practice - An interdisciplinary framework to operationalise AI ethics", which shows how ethics in AI can be concretely implemented and measured.
