Next level of EU regulations for vacuum cleaners

The next stages of the EU Regulations 665/2013 (Energy Consumption Labeling) and 666/2013 (Ecodesign) will enter into force and will intensify the requirements for new vacuum cleaners  as of  September 1, 2017.

Since September 1, 2014, the European Energy Label for vacuum cleaners exists. This allows the consumer to compare different devices with each other and to obtain all relevant information, such as energy consumption, cleaning effect and dust retention.

For all vacuum cleaners placed on the market from September 1, 2017, the minimum requirements for energy efficiency and performance as well as the classification of the appliances into energy efficiency classes are changing. Classes E to G do not apply, but the label also includes classes A + to A +++ for particularly energy-saving vacuum cleaners.

The allowed limit for the power consumption is then only 900 watts and also the annual energy consumption should not exceed a maximum permissible value of 43.0 kWh.

In addition, the Ecodesign Regulation provides minimum requirements for dust intake, dust emissions and noise levels. For example, a vacuum cleaner must remove at least 75 percent of the dust from the carpet floor. The volume may only be a maximum of 80 decibels.

For the first time, there are also requirements for the lifetime of the devices. Accordingly, motors must exceed a load test with 40,000 swings for at least 500 operating hours and hoses.

For the consumer, the new requirements mean less power consumption, quieter devices and a more effective cleaning of the suctioned soil.
