Forum on the economic viability and expansion of energy-efficient data centers for the massive use of generative AI in Europe
Intention
A turbocharge for the German and European economy – this is the increasing use of
software based on generative AI, i.e., the further development of machine learning
with the opening up of new fields of application for the masses. The door is open to
all who want to participate in this opportunity.
The `data engine´ is already running, and the momentum in the development of new
applications is breathtaking. Infrastructure is essential for expansion, for the further
advancement of development, and for increasing use.
Consequently, the question of energy resources for the operation of modern data
centers and the expansion of the communications infrastructure is central – from a
geopolitical, economic, and societal perspective. While solutions are not immediately
obvious, a multitude of technologies are currently being researched. WHEN and
HOW will these new technological approaches be brought to market and thus
transferred into application? Together, we want to pave the way for this …
Motivation
We plan a triad of information – communication – cooperation:
Information – learn about the latest technology trends and business concepts.
Communication – network with stakeholders from science, business, and politics.
Cooperation – gain inspiration for jointly exploiting future opportunities in Germany
and Europe.
Subject area
Technology: AI accelerators (chip technologies), optical interconnects (integrated
photonics, especially optical signal processing and quantum technologies)
Framework: USPs in Germany/Europe, backbone infrastructure taking into account
economic incentives for a broad audience, planning and operation of energy-efficient
data centers, legal and political support for the expansion of technology and
infrastructure
Increasing performance while simultaneously increasing energy efficiency
Format
The plan is not to be a purely academic forum, but rather a format for open exchange
between academia, business (SMEs, investors), and politics. A one-day event with
approximately three plenary sessions is conceivable (keynotes with plenty of room
for open discussion, which may also be critical). Further options include panel
discussions, networking lounges, table sessions, a pre-event event/dinner, etc.
Location
A location in the greater Frankfurt/Rhine-Main area is being planned due to its
proximity to the German Commercial Internet Exchange (DE-CIX) and several data
centers, one of which can be visited if necessary.
Role of the VDE
The VDE sees itself as a moderator and driving force with its expertise in
information technology (VDE ITG) and energy (VDE ETG) and thus as an “advocate”
for increasing AI performance while simultaneously saving energy.
