(07.03.2023, Frankfurt a. M.) You are a female electrical engineer in the field of electrical engineering or information technology, have just finished your dissertation and are a member of VDE? Then apply for the Dr. Wilhelmy VDE Award for the year 2023. You still have until March 31 to participate, then the application period ends.
The Dr. Wilhelmy Foundation and the VDE launched the prize, which comes with 3,000 euros in prize money, in 2014 to promote young female scientists. Each year, a jury at the VDE selects the prize winners from among all those who have completed their doctoral thesis during an academic year. In addition to graduating cum laude, the prerequisite for the award is that the dissertation is of great significance for science and for Germany as a location for technology. The Dr. Wilhelmy Foundation provides funding of 9,000 euros per year for three female award winners.
Proportion of women below ten percent
On the labor market, the proportion of women among electrical engineers is less than ten percent as the German Economic Institute IW in Cologne has evaluated from the figures of the microcensus of the Federal Statistical Office of Germany for the VDE. With the Dr. Wilhelmy VDE Prize, we want to make a contribution to getting even more women and girls excited about technology.
Doctoral theses become patents
Like the award winners of the past few years, who have developed solutions in their dissertations that can improve medical care or contribute to greater energy efficiency, among other things. Not rarely, this has also resulted in patents.
Applicants can submit their dissertations to the VDE Committee for Women Electrical Engineers at ingenieurinnen@vde.com until March 31, 2023.
