The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has appointed energy expert Alexander Nollau and metering/digitalization expert Frank Borchardt as permanent members of its Gateway Standardization Committee in accordance with Section 27 of Germany's Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG). This committee is tasked with the further development of technical standards for the digitalization of the energy transition, including in connection with networks, mobility, and buildings. Nollau and Borchardt – who work for the standardization organization VDE DKE and the Forum Network Technology/Network Operation (VDE FNN), respectively – will be contributing their expertise in standardization and regulation over a period of three years.

About Alexander Nollau

Alexander Nollau, head of energy at the standardization organization DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE (VDE DKE), will be contributing his expertise in electrotechnical standardization in both German and international contexts. “Thanks to the broad range of topics covered within DKE, our experts represent all segments of the energy sector. VDE DKE has a dedicated working group in which it brings together and coordinates all standardization activities in connection with the further development of smart meter gateways based on BMWi’s phased model,” says Nollau, who is very pleased to have been appointed to the Gateway Standardization Committee. He believes this distinction reflects VDE DKE's close cooperation with BMWi and the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) on the further development of the overall metering system.

“VDE FNN’s task on the committee will be to advise BSI during the approval process for the technical guidelines relating to the smart meter gateway. Our experts have many years of expertise in developing technical specifications for the main parts of the new measuring system, including meters, smart meter gateways, and control boxes,” explains Frank Borchardt, senior project manager for metering and digitization at VDE FNN. At VDE FNN, all the relevant groups of experts – network and metering point operators, equipment manufacturers, and related authorities – work closely together in coordination with BMWi, BSI, the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), and the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB).
