Norms and standards make a relevant and practical contribution to supporting the energy transition. The potential of norms and standards has not yet been exhausted in this regard, as the German Standardization Panel 2023 presented today from 1,800 company contributions shows.

Meanwhile, companies in the survey also rate the importance of standards for the aspects of resilience and sustainability as high as for their competitiveness. The survey conducted by the Technical University of Berlin from October 2022 to January 2023 included information from around 1,800 companies. As national standards organizations, the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (DKE) support the project, which has been under the patronage of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) since 2016.

The focus of the study was access to affordable and clean energy and the potential of standardization for this. The researchers* found that 58% of the companies surveyed already purchase renewable energy and 40% produce renewable energy themselves. Another result: standards are seen as necessary to support industry in the energy transition, especially with regard to transparency and comparability.

For the German Standardization Panel, the researchers regularly ask what importance standards have for companies. To date, the German Standardization Panel has received data from 5,000 different companies, including more than half of the DAX 30 corporations and many small and medium-sized enterprises. Among other things, the data collected helps to generate new scientific findings on the subject of standardization for research. The results to date can be viewed at https://www.normungspanel.de/en/. On July 6, 2023, the results of this year's survey were presented to the public at an event held at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
