New EU requirements for charging stations

The European Commission has published a decision that has far-reaching implications for all manufacturers of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Charging stations will have to comply with the ISO 15118 series of standards as early as next year. The VDE Institute already offers many suitable tests and is developing further test procedures to ensure compliance with the standard.

From January 8, 2026, all publicly accessible charging points must meet the requirements of the EN ISO 15118-1 to -5 series of standards. From January 1, 2027, the implementation of EN ISO 15118-20 will also be mandatory – even for privately or semi-publicly operated charging stations. These standards are the central basis for future-oriented functions such as “Plug & Charge”, secure communication between vehicle and charging point and bidirectional charging (vehicle-to-grid).

Reliable certifications for conformity with standards in accordance with ISO 15118

The VDE Testing and Certification Institute is responding to the new regulatory requirements at an early stage and is working hard to develop standardized test procedures. The aim is to be able to offer manufacturers of AC and DC charging stations well-founded tests and reliable certifications for standard conformity in accordance with ISO 15118 at an early stage.

The VDE Institute's services for ISO 15118 range from interoperability and conformity tests for charging infrastructure, the creation of standard-compliant test reports and conformity certificates, to determining the degree of integration of new functions such as “Plug & Charge” and V2G.
