Our testing programs are based on relevant standards and specifications that define the required properties and acceptance criteria. In addition to standards-based testing, we also perform development-accompanying investigations and customer-specific special tests to characterize specific product attributes in a targeted manner. Successful testing and certification document compliance with the state of the art and create confidence in product quality, robustness, and fitness for purpose, both for manufacturers and end users.
Combining VDE Test Methods Ensures Reliable Performance and Safety in the Intended Application
A key element is the determination of protection ratings according to Ingress Protection (IP) and IK classifications. These ratings evaluate the degree of protection provided by enclosures against the ingress of solid foreign objects, dust, and water, as well as resistance to mechanical impacts. The VDE Institute covers the complete testing spectrum. Water exposure testing ranges from light spray conditions to full immersion. Using pressure chambers, immersion depths of up to 50 meters at pressures of up to 5 bar can be simulated under realistic conditions. Dust ingress testing is performed in specialized dust chambers under controlled conditions. In addition, protection against accidental contact is verified using standardized test probes to reliably exclude hazards caused by electrical contact.
Environmental simulation testing also includes a wide range of specialized procedures. Temperature shock testing evaluates resistance to sudden temperature changes and their effects on material stress and sealing performance. UV resistance testing uses controlled radiation exposure to assess aging effects caused by ultraviolet light, while solar simulation testing reproduces real-world solar radiation conditions to analyze thermal loads and performance under sunlight exposure.
As part of combined vibration and climatic testing, mechanical vibrations are applied while simultaneously exposing samples to temperature and humidity conditions, enabling realistic assessment of combined environmental stresses. Mechanical shock testing simulates short-duration, high-acceleration events, such as impacts or transportation-related shocks. Testing under defined temperature and humidity conditions allows the evaluation of product behavior under climatic extremes as well as prolonged exposure to moisture.
In addition, influences such as corrosion are analyzed under aggressive environmental conditions, while altitude simulation and low-pressure testing evaluate behavior under reduced air pressure conditions, such as those encountered during air transportation or operation at high altitudes.
